MORE ABOUT THE FILMS

OPENING FILM: DESHANTORI (’migrant’ in Bangla), this documentary interviews scholars and people on the street to present a view of why so many young people feel they need to leave Bangladesh in order to become successful. Interwoven with these interviews is the true story of the 26 men who tried to cross the Sahara desert on their way to Spain.

MIGRANT LENS: Set aside for films made by migrants themselves, this year features seven short films. Two documentaries are made by Central Asian women married to Korean men, while a more whimsical view from a Chinese woman coping with cultural difference with her Korean husband. Another documentary is about a migrant worker band here in Seoul.

INSIDE CULTURE: The first is a drama from southern India called VANAJA about a young girl learning traditional dance, but this coming of age film combines love and laughter, with heartache and tears. The second film is a documentary from Rome, Italy called THE ORCHESTRA OF PIAZZA VITTORIO about a multiethnic orchestra that comes together to save a theater from destruction in one of Rome’s most ethnically diverse neighborhoods.

ABOUT THE BENEFICIARY
In the face of widespread discrimination, nearly 20% of Amerasian children in Korea drop out of school during junior high, while 10% drop out during elementary school. Over 40% will go on to meet discrimination in the workplace. (2004 data) Amerasian Christian Academy was established in 1999 to meet the educational needs of single parent mixed ethnicity children in the city of Dongducheon. Using English as the main mode of teaching and communication, ACA’s aim is to provide an environment where mixed ethnicity students are all welcome and can study without discrimination. At ACA, students build bilingual, leadership, and creative skills through diverse educational programs starting from kindergarten through high school.

PB&J 27: Benefit Party for Taean/Mallipo

Saturday, February 2, 2008
9 pm - 2 am
@ Monghwan in Shinchon /

입장료 | cover charge - 10,000 won

This month’s benefit will go to help oil spill clean-up and restoration efforts in the Taean/Mallipo area of the West Coast.

As always, we have a great line-up for you including the return of our former resident DJ from 2006, accomplice! If you like dancehall (some call it reggae), then be sure to come early!!

And this will also be DJ I.N.gram’s last show for a while, so don’t miss it!

FEATURING

accomplice dancehall surprise
DJ Silent garage hip-hop
DJ LadyBird deepdubbydisco
DJ I.N.gram hip-hop funk

Proceeds will be donated towards long-term recovery efforts in the Taean/Mallipo area after December’s oil spill on the west coast. 113,000 tonnes of crude oil were spilled, and while over a million volunteers have helped with the clean-up, the local economy and environment remain devastated and need our help.

Dance Party for Resilience
Saturday August 11, 2007
@ Monghwan in Shinchon
9:00 pm - 2:30 am
10,000 won! All proceeds donated toward continuing production of the film “Resiliance”, a documentary about birth mothers who gave their children up for adoption.

Resilience tells the stories of Korean birth mothers who gave their children up for international adoption. The film explores the reasons and circumstances behind their painful decision, which was often due to a lack of social welfare support and women’s rights. For the very first time, despite stigma and discrimination from their own society, these birth mothers bravely come forward to share their stories of profound loss, struggle, and ultimately, of courage and strength.
